RinCast

Your PC, in your headset.

Stream every monitor and your PC VR games to a Meta Quest 3 or PICO 4, at home or from anywhere. Free and open source.

All your monitors, as big as you like.

Each monitor is its own window in the air. Curve them, move them, make one as wide as a cinema screen. Point with the controller to use the mouse, and bring up a keyboard when you need one.

  • Text stays sharp enough to work in
  • Wakes a sleeping display when you connect
  • Hands work too: pinch to click, pinch and move to scroll

Pick a game. Jump straight in.

Your installed VR games appear in the headset with their artwork. Choose one and RinCast starts SteamVR and the game on your PC, while hyperspace plays around you until the first frame arrives.

  • H.264, HEVC and AV1 on NVIDIA, AMD and Intel graphics
  • 72, 80, 90 and 120 Hz, as far as your headset goes
  • PC sound in the headset, your voice in the game
Light streaks and a glowing ring rushing past in a starry space: the hyperspace effect RinCast plays while a game starts.

Away from home? Your PC comes along.

Sign in on both devices and your PC appears in the headset wherever you are. The account server only introduces them. Then the video goes straight from your PC to your headset, encrypted, and never through anyone else's computer.

  • Adapts to slow connections and recovers on its own
  • A PC only accepts headsets you've allowed on that PC
  • No account needed on your own network

If you don't like something, change it.

RinCast is MIT licensed, with no subscription, no ads and nothing held back. The streamer, the headset app and the account server are all in one repository, and you can run your own server.

  • Change the app. Native C++ on both ends, with no engine in the way.
  • Run your own server. One small Go program. It never carries your video.
  • Keep your data. Download it or delete your account at any time.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. There's no paid version, and the code is MIT licensed, so anyone can use, change and share it.

Do I need an account?

Not on your own network: open RinCast on the Quest and your PC shows up. You only need one to connect from other networks.

Does my video go through your server?

Never. The server introduces your headset and PC, and they then connect directly, using IPv6, hole punching or a router port mapping. If no direct path exists, the connection fails and tells you why. It doesn't fall back to a relay.

Which games work?

Anything that runs in SteamVR. Your installed Steam VR games are listed in the headset, and you can also start games from your PC.

Which headsets work?

Meta Quest 3 is the one RinCast is built and tested for. The same app runs on PICO 4 and PICO 4 Ultra, with PICO Motion Trackers, but it hasn't been tested on a PICO yet.

How do I get the microphone working in apps?

RinCast uses Steam's streaming audio devices. Turn on Remote Play in Steam to add them, then choose Steam Streaming Microphone as the input in your app.

My headset can't find my PC. What now?

Check that RinCast Streamer is running, that both are on the same network (guest Wi-Fi keeps them apart), and that Windows' firewall allows it on private networks. If your network blocks discovery, enter the PC's address in the headset.

Does it work on Linux or a Mac?

Not yet. The streamer is Windows only for now. A Linux version is planned.

How does it compare with Virtual Desktop?

Virtual Desktop is a polished paid app that supports more headsets and has years of testing behind it. RinCast is new: some of its features, such as frame generation, body tracking and eye and face tracking forwarding, are built but not yet tested on a headset. RinCast is free and open source, and it can use your own server. If you want the most complete option today, Virtual Desktop is worth a look.
